Motorcycle Brakes Wear Out And Need To Be Checked Before Its Too Late

Motorcycle brakes are like tires they wear over time and must be replaced. If you let the pads wear out you could damage the rotor. If you damage the rotor in most cases it has to be replaced.

The best way to prevent this is to inspect and replace the pads when less than 1/8 inch of pad is left. Also make note of any usual noise heard when brake is applied this could be a sign of worn pads.

If you note worn rotors this also might mean the pads are worn. Replacing the pads is a pretty simple repair if you have never replaced them before get a manual before doing this.

Replacing pads normally requires removing two bolts to remove the caliper once this is done note how the pads go in the calipers.

Remove the pads and compress the caliper cups back so the pads can be replaced. Most people use a large pair of pliers to do this the best method is to purchase the tool made for this.

Insert the pads as the old one came out and reinstall the caliper install the bolts you removed and apply the brake to make sure you have brakes.

Next you should check the fluid and fill as needed. Unless you removed a brake line you should not have to bled the brakes.Check the brakes at low speeds to make sure they function properly before hitting the road.

ABS BRAKES

ABS brakes are designed to prevent wheel lockup when braking. Abs also known as antilock brakes only activate under heavy braking or when the computer detects a wheel is going to loose traction. They are very effective on wet road or when having to brake hard. I have seen websites saying that abs is ineffective or it inst needed by experienced riders. The facts are every test performed showed abs brakes perform as they are designed. A recent study showed abs brakes reduced fatalities by over 38 percent. I think that should speak pretty much favorable for them.

ABS Motorcycle Brake Troubleshooting

If the light comes on it must be taken to a repair shop to have a diagnostic test ran on it and repaired.

Each wheel has a ring on it and a sensor which is a magnetic switch check the ring for damage or dirt in the openings in the ring. This is about the only repair that can be performed at home.
